Specialties and Therapeutic Approach

Dr. Ning Tang, Ph.D., is a counseling psychologist and trauma therapist in Raleigh, NC. She specializes in trauma-informed care and evidence-based treatment of PTSD and trauma-related disorders. Dr. Tang treats: PTSD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, insomnia and sleep issues, OCD, grief, chronic pain, identity concerns, relationship challenges, anger, race, gender, and sexual orientation related stress, adjustment difficulties, academic and career issues, and self-esteem. Dr. Tang offers care to individuals and couples in-person in Raleigh, NC and via telehealth throughout the state of NC. She provides evidence-based, compassionate care tailored to each client’s needs.

Dr. Tang has particular interest and experience in supporting individuals navigating cross-cultural transitions. She enjoys working with international students, immigrants, visiting scholars, and professionals adjusting to life in the United States. Many of her clients struggle with homesickness, loneliness, academic pressure, discrimination or microaggressions, and the emotional toll of living between cultures. She also works with individuals who may feel isolated due to caregiving roles or limited access to support in their primary language.

Evidence-Based Care

Her therapeutic style is collaborative, flexible, and deeply compassionate. Dr. Tang integrates a wide range of approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness-based interventions, and self-compassion practices. Dr. Tang also integrates Expressive Arts Therapy, combining creativity and psychology to help clients express what feels hard to say, uncover insight, and heal through the process of creation itself. She tailors these tools to the unique needs of each client, helping them move through suffering and reconnect with meaning, values, and a sense of wholeness.

Dr. Tang is also experienced in group therapy, having co-led DBT skills groups for trauma survivors and dual-diagnosis groups addressing trauma and substance use, as well as groups for grief support, and depression & bipolar support. She conducts psychological assessments, including ADHD and personality testing, and approaches testing as a way to provide clarity, validation, and actionable insight. Fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese, she provides inclusive and culturally responsive care.

Language, Culture, and Mandarin-Speaking Care

Dr. Tang provides therapy in both English and Mandarin Chinese (中文 / 國語). Originally from Taiwan, she brings lived understanding of the immigrant and international student experience and has worked clinically with Mandarin-speaking clients from a range of cultural backgrounds, including Taiwan and Mainland China. She is attentive to linguistic and cultural nuances and adapts her communication thoughtfully to ensure clarity, emotional safety, and connection. Her work is grounded in cultural humility and sensitivity to the impact of identity, language, and systemic stressors on mental health.

Dr. Tang offers in-person therapy in North Raleigh and virtual therapy throughout North Carolina, including clients across the Research Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Cary). Some clients choose to travel for in-person care due to the limited availability of Mandarin-speaking psychologists.
